After two months of bitter combat in Normandy, Operation Bluecoat transformed the campaign into a war of movement.
The museum tells the story of the British breakthrough begun on 30 July by the 11th Armored Division, and the infantry of 15th (Scottish) Division. This was initially opposed by 21. Panzerdivision , and later by the Germans' most powerful formations in the west: 9. SS-Panzer Hohenstaufen and 10. SS-Panzer Frundsberg . Under the hot summer sun, thrust met with counter thrust in a rapidly changing mobile battle, culminating in the August struggle for mastery of Perrier Ridge and Estry, and the Germans' headlong retreat from Normandy.
Throughout eight sections the guided audio presentation allows visitors to discover true story of the British breakout and the crucial battle around the town of Saint-Martin-des-Besaces.
Passionate research has made it possible to find and welcome these men who bear witness to their struggle, and to their sometimes exceptional, often moving, destiny.
